Irish PEN/PEN na hÉireann expresses its grave concern about the recent drone attacks and threats directed against the Global Sumud Flotilla as it sails toward Gaza. These acts of intimidation against a non-violent civilian vessel carrying humanitarian aid and unarmed activists are unacceptable under international law.
Several Irish citizens are participating in the flotilla, including writers Naoise Dolan (novelist) and Sarah Clancy (poet).
Their presence highlights again the vital role of literature in bearing witness to, and speaking out against, injustice and in standing with those who are silenced or besieged. And it reflects the long Irish tradition, rooted in our own historical wounds, of international solidarity with those who are suffering and facing injustice or starvation.
The flotilla seeks only to deliver aid and to highlight the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Irish PEN/PEN na hÉireann expresses its support for these aims. We call on the Irish government and the Irish embassy in Israel to condemn any intimidation of the flotilla or of the Irish citizens on board. And we reiterate our call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all the hostages, and the protection of the lives and human rights of writers, journalists, and all innocent people affected by the ongoing genocide in Palestine.
